SKIN REJUVENATION
As we age, our skin naturally changes due to internal factors such as the ageing process, certain illnesses, hormone levels, stress, and our diet and exercise habits. The main external factor responsible for changes in the skin is exposure to UV radiation, including sunlight and tanning beds. This accounts for around 80% of visible skin changes and is known as photo-ageing.
Other external factors can also affect the condition and appearance of the skin, including environmental conditions such as extreme cold or heat, as well as exposure to pollution.
sKIN Aging
The main changes we see in the skin on the face and body include textural irregularities such as wrinkles, skin laxity or crepey skin, pigmentation changes such as sunspots, and the development of benign skin lesions. In addition, the skin gradually loses its tone, firmness, and the healthy, youthful glow we had when we were younger.
These changes occur because the skin produces less collagen and elastin over time – essential proteins responsible for maintaining the skin’s strength, elasticity and smoothness. As a result, the skin becomes thinner, less elastic, and more prone to visible signs of ageing.
Different treatment modalities are available to address the various aspects of skin damage and ageing, including energy-based devices for skin tightening, laser resurfacing treatments, and injectable medical treatments.
Most skin treatments require a series of sessions, and often a multi-modality approach is recommended in order to achieve the best possible results.
Every patient is unique and may present with different combinations of internal and external signs of ageing that affect their skin. In addition, each patient has their own goals and priorities, as individuals may notice or place more importance on certain changes in their skin than others.
The following are some of the skin concerns that different skin rejuvenation treatments can address:
Static wrinkles: These wrinkles are visible at all times and do not change in appearance with facial movements.
Dynamic wrinkles: These are expression lines that may appear as folds when the skin is at rest and become deeper with facial movements or expressions.
Pigmentation: Freckles, sunspots, or other darkened patches of skin that mainly result from sun exposure.
Loss of skin tone: Weakening of the supportive skin structures (collagen and elastin fibres), which leads to reduced skin firmness and, in some areas of the body, the development of cellulite.
Dull skin: Skin that has lost its vibrant glow due to a buildup of dead skin cells and clogged pores.
AGEING BEAUTIFULLY
There is often a taboo surrounding aesthetic treatments, with some people believing that anyone seeking medical cosmetic procedures is being “vain” or “fake.” However, the reality is that those who choose these treatments are often looking for self-improvement, while maintaining and restoring both their internal skin health and their natural, youthful appearance. Ageing is a natural process, and it can be achieved beautifully - this is the ethos of Dr Zafra, founder of Zafra Medical.
We would like to thank our patients for sharing their journey with us. While we will not reveal the exact details of each case, as every person has received different treatments, all procedures at Zafra Medical are bespoke and carefully tailored to each patient following a thorough in-depth medical consultation.
